I remember when I was a little girl, the TV told me to drink my milk, so I would grow up tall and strong. The dairy industry is incredibly powerful and has done a great job marketing milk as healthy and THE source of calcium. But, I’ve learned the truth, milk doesn’t do a body good– it actually does the opposite.
The Harvard School of Public Health has found that it is “not clear that dairy products are really the best source of calcium for most people.” If you drink a lot of it, it can “paradoxically weaken bones.” Instead of milk, it recommends getting your calcium from leafy green vegetables, broccoli, beans and tofu. For Vitamin D, it says, take a supplement.
In Dr. Mercola’s opinion “there’s no reason to eat pasteurized dairy products, ever. Pasteurizing milk significantly impairs the biological value of the food and destroys enzymes, diminishes vitamins, denatures fragile milk proteins, destroys vitamin B12 and vitamin B6, kills beneficial bacteria, and actually promotes pathogens.”
“Ironically, osteoporosis tends to occur in countries where calcium intake is highest and most of it comes from protein-rich dairy products,” says Dr. Campbell, head of the China Project, the most comprehensive large study ever undertaken of the relationship between diet and the risk of developing disease.
The famous Nurse’s Health Study examining health habits of 47,000 nurses found that those who drank more milk as teenagers had much higher rates of severe acne than those who had little or no milk as teenagers. It was skim milk that had the strongest risk for acne. In other studies of over 10,000 boys and girls from 9 to 15 years old, there was a direct link between the amount of milk consumed and the severity of acne.

The International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) and the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) have filed a petition with the FDA asking the FDA to alter the definition of “milk” to secretly include chemical sweeteners such as aspartame and sucralose. And the abuse the animals face is inexcusable. The practice of cutting off the ends of the tails of dairy cows — known as tail docking — is found in about half of American dairy farms, according to a 2002 U.S. Department of Agriculture report. Animals rights groups say the big operations create abuse. “Every single time that we send investigators undercover into America’s factory farms, they emerge with startling evidence of animal cruelty and neglect,” Mercy for Animals.

The good news is who needs all that dairy anyway? You can get your calcium from green vegetables. Greens have calcium absorption rates of over 50%, compared with 32% in milk. Calcium is best assimilated by the body when magnesium is present, as it is with greens.
If you still want the white and creamy liquid in your life, try Almond, Hemp or Coconut milk. These are healthy, nutritious alternatives that taste awesome! If you buy store bought nut milks make sure they do not have the ingredients “carrageenan” or “natural flavors.” Both ingredients are toxic.
